The Purpose of the Photographers Place is:

To create a community of photographic artists for mutual support, education and inspiration. A Photographers Place is a resource for photographers to learn, create, find support in furthering their careers, and grow as artists. We welcome photographic artists working in any medium, analogue to digital, to join us on our creative journey... No one can do it alone, we all a need community.

Making art is often a very solitary venture. Whether we’re making images, music or crafting words, we are often alone. And that’s unfortunate because the best ideas, the best work comes from the inspiration and associations we find in the world at large.

And that's what the photographers place is all about. A place for photographers to learn and grow, where ideas can be exchanged freely, nurturing talent and allowing the artist the space and the means to explore possibilities. The best ideas come from associations and experiences, not sitting alone in a room. There’s a reason The Beatles were the one of the most successful collaborative ventures in history. They took ideas and inspiration from everywhere. Only Beethoven spent more time alone in a room. And even he occasionally went out for a country walk…

My experiences the last several years working with the team that organizes the Click! Photography Festival has only reinforced this belief in the power of association and collaboration. I’ve seen up close what a small but mighty group can do to create an environment where artists are encouraged and enabled to follow their muse. I’ve seen the affect the experience can have on the artists themselves. It can be life changing. I know. I experienced it myself.

But festivals only run for a short period of time, limiting the number of photographers who might potentially engage. There are a fair number of artists collectives that create an environment for artists to create work, but not so much for photographers.

So, here we are.

A Photographers Place.

A ‘Place for our “Place

The search for a permanent home has led us across the Triangle. We thought we might have found our “place" but unfortunately, the Covid epidemic has undone those plans.

However, one thing the epidemic has shown us is the ability to conduct virtual meetings, which is how we will go forward at least for the near future. We are all looking forward to the day that in-person meetings will be safe for everyone!

In the meantime, the search for a suitable home will continue. Stay tuned…
