Portraits

We invited photographers to submit work relating to their interpretation of a “Portrait”.

How do you define a portrait? What does a portrait reveal? We are reminded of these words from Richard Avedon:

“The moment a fact is transformed into a photograph it is no longer a fact, but an opinion. There’s no such thing as in accuracy in a photograph. All photographs are accurate. None of them is the truth.”

A portrait can be defined as an exploration of the human form, personality, and presence. But is it always? Is the subject always identifiable?

Whether through traditional, staged, or candid imagery, we encouraged submissions that looked to the essence of the subject, from the intimate to the abstract. We welcomed a broad range of interpretations—from classic studio portraits to environmental, conceptual, and documentary approaches—aimed at reflecting the diversity and complexity of the human experience.

The exhibit was juried by portrait artist Titus Brooks Heagins.

The exhibition opens on April 11, 2025 and runs through May 10, 2025.
