APP Focus Groups: Preparing Work for Submissions

$50.00

APP Focus Groups are a collaborative online class designed for photographers who want to share their work, receive constructive critique, and engage in meaningful discussions about the creative process. They are immersive, interactive online classes designed for photographers who want to see their work exhibited, who want to move past superficial social media “likes” and engage in meaningful dialogue about their work.

In each session, participants will present selected images, talk about their artistic vision, and receive supportive feedback from both peers and the facilitator. Through guided discussion, you'll gain fresh perspectives, strengthen your editing and storytelling skills, and develop a deeper understanding of what makes an image and series resonate.

Whether you're working on a personal project, building a portfolio, or simply seeking inspiration, Focus Groups provide a welcoming environment to connect with fellow photographers, refine your work, and grow your creative confidence.

Our inaugural Focus Group will be a 3 week class in preparation for submitting work to the next APP Zone X Gallery call for work:

Classes will meet:

June 29, 2026. 7:00pm - 8:30pm

July 6, 2026, 7:00pm - 8:30pm

July 13, 2026, 7:00pm - 8:30pm

What You’ll Receive:

  • Constructive Group Critique: Gain fresh perspective on your composition, lighting, and narrative from peers and instructors who understand the craft.

  • Refine Your Vision: Discover recurring themes in your work and learn how to build a cohesive photographic portfolio or series.

  • Articulate Your Art: Practice talking about your technical choices and creative intent, a vital skill for exhibitions, grants, and client pitches.

  • Community Connection: Break out of the solitary shooting bubble and network with a passionate, diverse collective of visual storytellers.

Each session is strictly capped to ensure every participant receives dedicated time for their work.

Additionally, students in this cohort will receive a free entry into the July Gallery X call for work!

Open to photographers of all experience levels who are eager to learn, share, and develop their visual voice.

Facilitator

Sarah Shea Roberto

Sarah Shea Roberto is a North Carolina–based photographer and visual artist whose work explores alternative photographic processes, including cyanotypes, photograms, and chemigrams. Working at the intersection of experimentation and tradition, she combines digital techniques with historic darkroom practices to create distinctive, one-of-a-kind images.

Her process-driven approach embraces the unpredictable nature of photographic materials, celebrating serendipity, spontaneity, and the beauty found in chance and imperfection. Through slow, sustainable, and hands-on methods, her work invites viewers to reconsider photography as both a creative act and a physical experience.
