Women Photographers in the first 100 years

The history of photography is full of interesting, imaginative, creative and often eccentric characters. If you only read photo history accounts from the mid-20th century, you would think that very few women were involved. Thanks to enhanced interest and research, we find that not only were more women involved from the early days of the medium, but a great number made significant contributions to not only the practice, but also the methods and business of photography.

Ed Speas, who will lead this session, has had a lifelong interest in photography and its history. Over the past 5 years he has been an instructor for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) program at NC State University, and conducted classes such as A History of Photography, Women Photographers in the first 100 years, and Pictorialism to Straight Photography.
