B&W Film Developing Class June 23, 2026
Learn how to develop your own black and white film in our introductory film photography class!
Step away from the screen and get your hands wet in the timeless art of analog photography. In this hands-on class, participants will be introduced to the fundamentals of black-and-white film developing. This class is designed for photographers who want to take full control of their creative process—from clicking the shutter to holding a freshly developed negative.
Whether you have a dusty vintage camera you've been meaning to use, or you're a digital shooter looking to understand the foundations of photography, this workshop will demystify the chemistry and techniques behind traditional black-and-white film development.
What You Will Learn
The Anatomy of Film: Understand how light interacts with silver halides and how exposure choices affect your final development.
Darkroom Chemistry: Learn the role of the developer, stop bath, fixer, and wetting agent, including proper mixing and safe handling.
The "Blind" Load: Master the crucial skill of loading your film onto developing reels completely in the dark.
Time & Temperature Control: Discover how to calculate precise development times based on your film stock and ambient temperature.
Negative Care & Evaluation: Learn how to properly wash, dry, and store your negatives, as well as how to critique them for proper contrast and density.
What’s Included in the Class
All Chemistry & Equipment Provided: We supply the developing tanks, reels, and premium black-and-white chemicals.
Take-Home Negatives: You will leave the workshop with your own beautifully developed roll of film, sleeved and ready for scanning or printing.
What to Bring
An Exposed Roll of Film: Please bring one pre-exposed roll of standard 35mm or 120 format traditional black-and-white film (e.g., Ilford HP5, Kodak Tri-X).
Note: Please avoid C-41 process color-monochrome films (like Ilford XP2) or color film, as they require a different chemical process.
Curiosity about all things analog!
Who Is This For?
