In this hands-on class, participants will be introduced to the fundamentals of black-and-white film photography, from exposing to developing. The session begins with learning how to operate and load a manual 35mm camera and exposing a roll of film.

After photographing, students will be guided through the entire chemical development process from start to finish. By the end of the workshop, each participant will leave with their developed negatives and the foundational skills to develop black-and-white film on their own.

Whether you are an absolute beginner looking to try film for the first time or a digital photographer wanting to understand the roots of your craft, this class offers the perfect foundation in darkroom magic.

What You’ll Do:

  • The Shoot: Explore the surrounding area while shooting a roll of film, learning to see the world in black and white.

  • The Darkroom: Experience the thrill of loading a developing tank in complete darkness and processing your own negatives.

  • The Contact Sheet: Create a physical archive of your shoot, learning how to evaluate exposures and choose your best frames.

What’s Provided:

  • Darkroom chemistry and processing equipment.

  • Photographic paper for your contact sheet.

What to Bring:

  • A working manual 35mm SLR film camera (We will have a limited number of cameras available to rent. Please inquire prior to registration should you require one.).

  • One roll of black-and-white film (We highly recommend Kodak Tri-X 400 or Ilford HP5).

FAQ / Important Notes

  • Do I need darkroom experience? Not at all. We will guide you through every single step safely. However, a working knowledge of your camera is beneficial.

  • Age limit: This workshop is for ages 16+

  • Capacity: The number of participants will be strictly limited to ensure everyone receives personalized instruction and has dedicated access to an enlarger and darkroom station. Early registration is highly recommended.
